Something About the Stars is a short, animated, poetic documentary that depicts my memory of looking at the stars in the Cook Islands. Through silhouette stop-motion, this film explores the juxtaposition of the reality of memory versus the perception of memory. The voiceover throughout the piece shares my honest thoughts during this experience. The animation serves to imagine my emotions in the moment. The background of this film was done by backlighting a sarong that I made while in the Cook Islands. The pattern inked on the fabric was hand carved into a massive wood block by some of the indigenous people on the main island of Rarotonga. Having this keepsake as the backdrop for my piece enhances the way in which I attempt to both recreate and reimagine the setting for this memory in my animation. Due to the pandemic which resulted in a lack of resources, my film was shot entirely in my dorm room on my Samsung smartphone. While this situation brought about many challenges it forced me to be me creative and allowed my film to become what it is now. This project was made possible in part by the George ’51 and Marjorie ’44 Chandler Senior Experience Fund.
