Today, Terence Smith, the man behind the persona, reflects back on his place in gay rights history at the height of the AIDS crisis. Director's Bio: Whitney Skauge is an award-winning filmmaker dedicated to diverse storytelling and representation. Synopsis: Once a month, along the scorching southern desert border in Arizona, one group of searchers, the Aguilas del Desierto, set out to recover missing loved ones. Director's Bio: Kristy Guevara-Flanagan is an Associate Professor at UCLA’s School of Theatre, Film, and Television, where she heads the MFA Directing Documentary concentration. She has been making documentary films that focus on gender, death, and the Latinx community for nearly two decades. Guevara-Flanagan’s documentary and experimental films have screened at the Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW, and HotDocs film festivals and the Getty Museum. Her work has broadcast on PBS and the Sundance Channel, received numerous awards, and been funded by ITVS, the Sundance Institute, Fork Films, the IDA, the Tribeca Institute, Latino Public Broadcasting, and California Humanities. Aguilas

Synopsis: After seven of their drivers died from COVID-19, a car service in Queens, NY started hosting a community fridge on the sidewalk outside their offices. A small business started by immigrants, Fenix XL now serves a largely immigrant community with 24hr access to free food. Fanny, who lost her cleaning job when schools were closed, now relies on this fridge to survive. The first community fridge in NYC started outside a Bed Stuy apartment in February 2020; there are now over 100 across the city, inspiring a movement around the world. Director's Bio: Gareth Smit was born in 1990 in Heidelberg, South Africa. In 2014 he moved to New York to attend the International Center of Photography. He worked primarily as a photographer on long form documentary projects published in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The New Yorker and exhibited at The Alice Austen House Museum and The Tucson Museum of Art. In 2017 his interests shifted to cinematography. He camera operated on CRIME + PUNISHMENT, Stephen Maing’s 2018 documentary that received a Jury’s Award at Sundance. GIVE AND TAKE is his first film as director/dp. He is based in Brooklyn, New York.

Give and Take

An intimate glimpse into the community fridge movement in New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Synopsis: KINDERLAND tells the story of two progressive Jewish summer camps in upstate New York that have cultivated social activists for almost a century and are still in existence today. Both were founded by secular working-class Jews on either side of the leftist political divide. Kinderland was communist; Kinder Ring, socialist. Despite numerous commonalities, they enjoyed a legendary feud from opposite ends of Sylvan Lake—a comically unlikely battle ground for an ideological war. Many original alumni became leaders in the early fight for civil rights and in the American labor movement. In response to the Trump era and the accompanying rise in intolerance and inequality, today’s campers, a largely secular multi-ethnic group, prioritize shared values over philosophical differences and attempt to join forces. The history of strife between two leftist organizations is emblematic of the division that is plaguing our nation; and their attempt at unity is universally inspiring. Director's Bio: Amy Grappell’s documentary QUADRANGLE won a jury prize at Sundance (2010) and Best Short Film at SXSW, AFI and Dallas Film Festivals, before being broadcast on HBO.

Kinderland

A century-old rivalry between two Jewish summer camps and their attempt at a newfound alliance.

Synopsis: Each year, hundreds of Central American migrants journeying north towards the United States go missing. Their mothers, left behind with nowhere to turn for support, organize together and journey by bus through Mexico, retracing the last known steps of their missing children. SINCE YOU ARRIVED, MY HEART STOPPED BELONGING TO ME is a short documentary that follows these mothers, offering a perspective from the alternate side of the immigration crisis. The film intimately explores the familial grief and longing of these mothers for their children and the tremendous personal costs of the social forces that affect migration. Director's Bio: Erin Semine Kökdil is a storyteller interested in building solidarity and inciting social change through film. Her work deals with issues of trauma, marginalization, and migration and has screened at IDFA, Hot Docs, Camden International Film Festival, AFIDocs, San Francisco International Film Festival, Palm Springs International ShortFest, among others. Her work has been supported by SFFILM and Points North Institute. Prior to becoming a filmmaker, she worked extensively with non-profits and community-led initiatives in the U.S. and Guatemala. She holds a BA in Latin American Studies and Spanish from Smith College and an MFA in Documentary Film and Video from Stanford University.
