Synopsis: Taiwan, 1960s, a time of political chaos and military surveillance. After a long disappearance, a father is finally reunited with his wife and daughter in their village. But the happy reunion soon gives way to the lingering trauma of political violence: the family watches helplessly as the man they love struggles with paranoia, angry outbursts, and fear they cannot understand. Despite her confusion, his little girl is determined to help him return to the man he was.

Through the lens of a seven-year-old girl and her relationship with her father, THE BLACK KITE examines the complexities of suffering and surviving under totalitarianism.
