GUISADO ON SUNSET was designed by Terence Nance to be seen on a phone and to be distributed via text message. Director's Bio: Terence Nance was born in Dallas, Texas, in what was then referred to as the State Thomas community. Nance’s first feature film,&nbsp;AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY, premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and was released theatrically in 2013. In the summer of 2018, Terence’s Peabody Award–winning television series RANDOM ACTS OF FLYNESS debuted on HBO to great critical acclaim and was renewed for a second season.

Synopsis: Milagros and Alex deal with separation as they prepare to perform at their community’s redevelopment ceremony. Director's Bio: Faren Humes is a writer and filmmaker from Miami, Florida. Her work melds documentary and narrative conventions to explore themes of connectedness and belonging.

Liberty

Synopsis: Femi is a Nigerian immigrant who works as a manager at a grocery store in Brooklyn, New York. Over the course of a night, he is informed by a fellow manager that his older brother, Adeola, has stolen a large sum of cash during his shift as a cashier. In confronting Adeola for the missing cash, two brothers question their dissonant life values and realize how different they have transformed from one another in pursuing the American Dream. Director's Bio: Adewale Olukayode is a writer-director and comedian born in Lagos, Nigeria, and raised in Brooklyn, New York. A graduate of Brooklyn College with a degree in Creative Writing and Film Production, he now studies at Columbia University’s MFA program for Screenwriting/Directing. His films address themes of justice, transformation and healing. His style is influenced by African cinema, which he spoke passionately about at the College de France as a guest lecturer. Adewale won the 2019 Director’s Guild of America student award for his short film, HOME. His directing work has been nominated for two NY Emmy Awards, including WE ARE ONE, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival at their Youth Initiative. He is currently working on his first feature EAST NEW YORK which was awarded the Princess Grace-Louis Srybnik Award.

Two immigrant brothers from Nigeria suffer terminal consequences as the pursuit of the American dream defies their brotherhood.

Synopsis: In the Florida Panhandle lies the town of Marianna, Florida, where one resident runs a particular marathon in hopes to lift the veil of racial terror caused by the town’s buried history. In THE CHANGING SAME, we follow Lamar as he runs 13 miles to retrace the same route Claude Neal took that fateful night. His love for his town and sense of duty to shine a light on this painful past motivates him to do this every year. With the help of three other residents, he works towards trying to heal a community that has paid a price for silence and denial. Directors' Bios: Rada Studio began in 2006 as a partnership between husband and wife team Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson with a mission: To create compelling visual stories that provoke thought about the complex multicultural world we exist in. This commitment was made before the creation of the company. “Our work is an expression of our own personal mission to use visual storytelling to better understand our experiences as people of color navigating American society.” Brewster and Stephenson’s approach to visual storytelling is inmate while simultaneously giving voice to larger issues that directly affect communities of color. “In our work we try very hard to avoid clichés about our communities and attempt to scratch beneath the surface to where answers are not always easy,” says Brewster. It is in those grey areas that art is created and where change can be affected for us as individuals as well as for the constantly shining communities we reside in.”

The Changing Same

Eighty years after the lynching of Claude Neal—the last spectacle lynching of 20th Century U.S.— four residents of Marianna struggle with the legacy of racial terror in the Florida Panhandle.

Synopsis: As COVID-19 evolves into a pandemic, this experimental documentary explores various moments that people of Chinese ethnicity live through, questioning what the Chinese identity means. Director's Bio: Rubing Zhang is from Beijing, China, and currently attends Swarthmore College. Rubing studies Film and Media Studies as well as Philosophy.

Synopsis: Caught in the throes of a depressive fugue, young Lynn resorts to debauchery to find joy—only to discover that happiness is a much more complicated proposition. Directors' Bios: Elegance Bratton began making films as a U.S. Marine. He holds a BS from Columbia University and an MFA from NYU. His documentary PIER KIDS (2019) follows queer and trans homeless youth in NYC to unpack the legacy of Stonewall for queer people of color. He is the executive producer/co-creator of Viceland’s GLAAD Media Award–nominated series My House, and is a Tribeca All Access fellow and a Film Independent Fast Track fellow. Jovan James holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and an MFA from NYU. His first film, THE JUMP OFF, had its film festival debut at Urbanworld Film Festival and played 23 festivals. His next short, TADPOLE, won best student film at New Hampshire Film Festival 2018.

Young Lynn resorts to debauchery to find joy—only to discover that happiness is a much more complicated proposition.

Synopsis: In Japanese, there is a special word for an unborn life. Mizuko, which means “water child,” is used to refer to both miscarried and aborted pregnancies. In addition to this word, there's a Buddhist ritual for grief called "mizuko kuyo" that allows women to metaphorically return their water children to the sea. Told through the Japanese American filmmaker’s personal story of abortion in the United States, MIZUKO is a partially animated, intimate reckoning with the impact of this cultural context. Directors' Bios: Kira Dane is a half-Japanese filmmaker from New York, currently based in Japan. Having been shaped and informed by two extremely different cultures, she is most comfortable in gray areas. As an artist, she's most interested in telling stories that dig for nuance. With a background in illustration, she often utilizes animation and experimental form in her work. Kira was a 2019 fellow of the Sundance Ignite Program. Katelyn Rebelo is a filmmaker based in Brooklyn. Her work sits at the intersection of documentary and experimental film, often exploring stories that reimagine concepts of femininity, politics, and personal freedom. She is currently the Spring 2020 Woman Filmmaker Fellow at Jacob Burns Film Center, and holds a BFA from NYU Tisch School of the Arts with a major in Film and Television and minor in Social and Cultural Analysis.
