During the Second World War, the White Mountains in Crete were a key spot for the country’s Resistance army to sabotage and fight back against the Nazis. And it was there in 1946, shortly after Greece was liberated, that a new guerrilla army formed from the remnants of the Resistance. But this time it was to fight a civil war – a supreme military, social and class confrontation the likes of which have never existed before.

Filmmaker Alexandros Papathanasiou travels to Crete to meet Lefteris Eliakis, a guerrilla fighter during the Civil War and a political prisoner for almost two decades. This insightful portrait conjures the ghosts of the Civil War – the maverick people, revolutionary politics, and breathtaking events that have shaped today’s Greece.
