Like the water we swim in, The Water Holds Me/The Water Binds Us animates, holds and binds together our experiences of wild swimming. Based on the stories of women who dip, dive and swim in rivers, lakes and seas, it evokes many different experiences in one swim, from the anticipation of getting in cold water to the feeling of floating alone and the conviviality of bobbing together. The film celebrates the power of water to wash away pain and fear and restore and revive our relationships with the natural world and each other.

The Water Holds Me/The Water Binds Us  is a collaboration between Charlotte Bates and Kate Moles, sociologists and swimmers based at Cardiff University, and illustrator, animator and swimmer Lily Mae Kroese, with sound by Jennifer Walton. Drawn from research with the wild swimming community across the UK, it is part of a larger project exploring what wild swimming feels like and what it brings to our lives.

Fel y dŵr rydym yn nofio ynddo, mae The Water Holds Me / The Water Binds Us yn bywiogi, yn dal ac yn rhwymo ynghyd ein profiadau o nofio gwyllt. Yn seiliedig ar straeon menywod sy'n trochi, plymio a nofio mewn afonydd, llynnoedd a moroedd, mae'n dwyn i gof llawer o wahanol brofiadau mewn un nofiad, o'r disgwyliad o fynd i mewn i ddŵr oer i'r teimlad o arnofio ar eich pen eich hun a rhialtwch bobian i fyny ac i lawr yn y dŵr gyda'n gilydd. Mae'r ffilm yn dathlu’r grym sydd gan ddŵr i olchi poen ac ofn i ffwrdd ac i adfer ac adfywio ein perthnasoedd â'r byd naturiol a’n gilydd.

Mae The Water Holds Me / The Water Binds Us yn gydweithrediad rhwng Charlotte Bates a Kate Moles, cymdeithasegwyr a nofwyr o Brifysgol Caerdydd, a’r darlunydd, yr animeiddiwr a’r nofiwr Lily Mae Kroese, gyda sain gan Jennifer Walton. Mae’n deillio o ymchwil gyda'r gymuned nofio gwyllt ledled y DU, ac mae'n rhan o brosiect mwy o faint sy'n archwilio sut mae nofio gwyllt yn teimlo a pha beth a ddaw i'n bywydau.
