In recent years, more than 2,500 books have been removed from school districts around the US, labeled as BANNED, RESTRICTED, or CHALLENGED, and made unavailable to millions of students. By no accident, the themes targeted are the usual scapegoats of the American Right - LGBT issues, Black history, and Women’s empowerment - impeding the power of future generations to develop their own thoughts and opinions on critical social issues. By weaving together a lyrical montage of young readers and authors, the ABC’S OF BOOK BANNING reveals the voices of the impacted parties, and inspires hope for the future through the profound insights of inquisitive youthful minds.

The ABCs of Book Banning

“Paradise” revisits South Korea’s era of authoritarian development (1970s-1980s) through the lens of queer livelihood. Despite the harsh realities of successive dictatorships, compulsory military service, and expectations of marriage and childbirth, six elderly gay men reveal how they converted second-run theaters and nearby bars into popular sites of erotic liberation, same-sex friendships, and romantic encounters. Using rare footage of Seoul’s only extant second-run movie house, visual archives, and historical animation, “Paradise” documents South Korea’s vibrant gay underground before the solidification of democracy and the introduction of the internet in the 1990s. Along the way, it follows the pain and joy of queer citizens, whose stories appear for the first time in this empowering film of self-discovery and community building.

Directed and produced by Odu Adamu, BODY LANGUAGE is a candid conversation about body image and body experience for Black gay, queer, and same gender loving men. Men share their personal journeys through childhood, coming into the gay community, and acceptance and rejection based on body type. BODY LANGUAGE is an authentic dialogue about pain, heartache, healing, and self-love. This film speaks directly to Black g/q/SGL men but the ideas around body perfection, and what influences our perspectives, are universal.

Permissible Beauty uses the notion of ‘beauty’ as both a creative starting point and an analytical lens for interrogating the part that heritage has played in celebrating some lives whilst overlooking others. Placing Black queer experience at the heart of a highly collaborative process we will create richly layered portraits of contemporary figures (rendered in photography, oral testimony, performance and sound) out of a process of engagement with historic portraiture held in UK heritage collections. More Than a Feeling

Cat, a transgender woman in Tennessee who has been institutionalized since she was four years old, got off parole in 2020. This film documents her first months of freedom. The piece was composed from phone videos she sent me, Skype calls, archival material, and some footage that a friend had shot a few years before. Cat shares stories from her childhood and her life inside men's prisons, including her relationship with her husband and former cellmate Doc who remains incarcerated.
