The signs are indisputable: God has willed that Muzamil, Sakina’s infant son, will die when he turns 20. What happens next, and for the next 20 years, is the story of Sudan’s first official entry to the US Academy Awards and winner of the Lion of the Future Award for best debut feature at the Venice Film Festival. You Will Die at Twenty is a visually sumptuous “coming-of-death” fable about a mother and son’s struggle against the immoveable forces of superstition, religious devotion and parochialism, and a profound meditation on what it means to live in the present. Directed and co-written by Amjad Abu Alalal.

Join African and African American Studies professors Ayo A. Coly and Jesse Weaver Shipley for a panel discussion of You Will Die at Twenty and Eyimofe in the broader context of contemporary African cinema on Wednesday, May 26 at 8 pm. You will be sent the Zoom link if you purchase a ticket to either screening (or you can RSVP here).
