Welcome to the Crozet archipelago, a unique penguin paradise.

Each year, thousands of king penguins gather here to mate and reproduce. They all look alike, yet each one is unique. When a young male penguin returns to his native island to find a partner, he discovers that his dating profile needs work. In this singles club, penguins must be well fed, pleasingly voiced and brightly beaked.

The island's tuxedo-clad residents have discerning tastes and a complex social scene, where synchronized waddling is considered high art and personal space is measured in flipper lengths. And even when you find your soulmate it turns out that life isn’t a beach…especially when you’re surrounded by skuas trying to steal your egg, elephant seals that pay no attention to where they’re going and giant petrels that are ready to attack at the slightest sign of weakness. Not to mention the constant forays for food thousands of miles out into the Southern Seas.

So, where exactly are these penguins going when they leave the shore? The island’s resident scientists have been wanting to find this out for themselves. So they’ve equipped a number of penguins with armbands and tags to see just what they get up to when they plunge into the icy water. The film follows the exploits of two couples – Mr and Mrs 68 and Mr and Mrs 90 - as they embark on family life and marathon ocean-going voyages in order to keep their hungry chick happy.

Back at the beach, the penguins face awkward encounters with three-ton elephant seals, nosy sheathbills providing daily nostril inspections and strange human researchers. Watch as these feathered fashionistas perform delicate egg-exchanges, defend their territory with dramatic flair, and attempt to raise chicks while maintaining their dignity. It's a summer beach party like no other – where singing contests, predator dodging, and heat waves make family life a challenging adventure!

Filmed over an extraordinary nine-month period in one of Earth's most isolated and rarely documented locations, the footage captures the king penguins’ remarkable breeding cycle—the longest of any bird species at 15 months.
