In the Budongo Forest of western Uganda, life unfolds in quiet complexity. Animals, plants, and humans are entangled in constellations of mutual dependency. At the center of one such intricate web grows a powerful tree—Alstonia—a medicinal species vital to both Budongo’s wild chimpanzees and the people living along the forest’s edge. Waiting for Alstonia follows an urgent quest to understand the chimpanzees’ medicinal use of this tree and to document its role in human lives across generations, before it vanishes forever.
