On their sober anniversary, Syd (they/them), a gender-fluid Latine performance artist enlists Yvette (she/her), a neurotic Korean-American therapist, for emotional support. Syd plans to debut their latest performance art piece at the meeting. Yet upon entering, they discover they're actually at a gathering for Northwest Gathering of Workers and Dreamers of the Light (NWGOWADOL), led by Guy, a charismatic cult leader. Syd decides to perform anyway—but Yvette unexpectedly steals the show. Overtaken by some invisible spirit, she speaks in tongues; NWGOWADOL swarms her in awe. The friends process the event afterwards. Yvette's ancestor spirit, Halmeoni (grandma), pays a visit and explains the uncanny events.

How did I never go to a prince show, it was always an after party at the DNA while I was driving people around and they would get in the car and say, "I saw him!"Death will come for us one day and we will never have been his little private joy, but he will have been ours and that will be enough.

Tiffany, a K-drama fanatic and Thanh, an anime and gaming nerd, are roommates fresh out of college. Hoping to help her roommate put themself out in the romantic world, Tiffany secretly makes Thanh a dating profile. Thanh, in total frustration, must decide whether to speak up or let Tiffany walk all over them.

As a modern dance choreographer and as a transgender person, Sean Dorsey felt irresistibly drawn to San Francisco with its history of trans and queer resistance and culture. But the city he moved to in the early 2000s was not the city he had envisioned. He discovered he was the only openly trans modern dancer and no one was putting trans artists on stage. Dorsey spent the next two decades championing trans and queer performing arts in the city, hand in hand with his life partner, the musician, filmmaker and transgender activist Shawna Virago. Their Fresh Meat Festival is in its 21st season of showcasing trans and queer performance; Sean Dorsey Dance has toured innovative modern dance to more than 30 cities in the U.S. and abroad; and accolades have arrived in the form of prestigious national awards, commissions and grants.

In Durham, North Carolina, a vibrant and diverse queer chosen family has formed around José Romero, a charismatic organizer who is living with HIV. Together, in a place with unique and daunting challenges, José and their friends are modeling grassroots change, working together to create a community of love, activism, and mutual support. “Sunflowers turn to each other when they can’t find the sun,” Romero says, describing their mission. “That’s the kind of work I want to do: finding the light, even when it seems impossible.”

For Latino communities in the South, language barriers, immigration concerns, and other factors can create outsize risk for HIV. But in Durham, North Carolina, two friends are working to see that their community isn’t overlooked.

Three queer couples in Downtown L.A. have tender moments in their safe place when they are abruptly interrupted by sirens and anti-trans propaganda that fills the air. In this moment, they choose to push past their fear and join their community as they find strength in who they are.
