MEET THE FILMMAKERS: ORION ESHEL & LUTHER CLAYTON

Orion Eshel was born on July 11th 2002 in New York, USA, then moved to Costa Rica at the age of 4. He was a very creative and talented child, fluently speaking 3 languages, learning Capoeira and skateboarding to a high level and, most notably, becoming a proficient surfer. Orion was soon traveling around the world for surfing competitions and on his way to becoming a professional surfer. He began recording his surfing and uploading videos to Youtube at around 13 years old; which quickly led him to a passion for filmmaking. At 15 he was making small-scale commercials, music videos, and working on sets for documentaries. Naturally, his passion for filmmaking led to an interest in narrative films, and he became fixated in learning and studying everything about cinema; with an all-aspiring goal to make narrative films himself.

Luther Clayton was born February 14th 2002 in Norfolk, UK, but subsequently moved and grew up in Cornwall, UK. Growing up in the Cornish countryside, he spent a great deal of time outside in fields and forests playing many plot-driven imaginative games. Luther was always a great admirer of films, taking inspiration from the stories he saw to spark the stories he would play. He became interested in magic at the age of 10 after watching a television show on David Blaine. He began uploading videos on magic to Youtube at around 12 years old; but much like Orion, noticed that the filming and creation of the video was a newfound passion of his. Filming, magic, and his outdoor games all fell into one and he began cutting together short films for Youtube; eventually leading to a want to pursue documentary films.

It was through mutual interest in each other’s videos on Youtube that they became acquainted. Orion, with his recent interest in narrative films, had written an idea for a short film, inspired by the recent school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas. He sent the draft to Luther, asking for his thoughts, and Luther replied with a revised edition including a few more scenes. Thus began the 2 year process of making their first short film; which would take them on an unexpectedly profound journey of learning about more than just film. They first met in person a week before directing the film.
