“A Journey Upstream” is a short film about how two seemingly unrelated fish species help us understand the connectivity within our environment and the importance of a healthy Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Andrew and Eric Braker are two brothers, native Marylanders, avid fly fishing anglers, and sustainability advocates. This film is a reflection of all of those things. The Braker Brothers are going on a journey throughout the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, fishing for their two favorite native species (striped bass and brook trout), and spending time learning from various specialists in the field in order to gain a deeper understanding of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

“A Journey Upstream” is a personal overview and reflection of the Braker brothers’ love for their home watershed— the Chesapeake Bay watershed. It’s a view into how things have changed and how two pivotal species can distinguish the health of this massive ecosystem.

Colorado’s North Fork Valley was home to three major coal mines. As the industry changed, the mines began to close, delivering a large blow to the local economy. In the past decade, the region has transformed itself into an agricultural hotbed, thriving on the heels of healthy living and unique food in a picture perfect natural setting, surrounded by national forests. In 2019, the Trump Administration announced plans to open 95% of public lands to fracking for oil and gas, threatening a new way of life and a growing post-extractive economy that looks decades to build.

Colorado’s North Fork Valley built a post-extractive economy in the wake of coal’s collapse. But now oil and gas are knocking on the door, threatening a new way of living without extraction.

Electric cars, wind turbines, solar panels... The energy transition holds the promise of a more prosperous and peaceful world, finally free of oil, pollution and shortages. But this official thesis proves to be a myth : by breaking free of fossil fuels, we are setting ourselves up for a new dependence on rare metals. Severe ecological, economic for the supply of these strategic resources have already begun. And if the “green world” that awaits us turned out to be a new nightmare?
