There’s a subculture of kayaking known by few and understood by fewer. The paddlers don diving goggles and neoprene and slide into thin uncomfortable boats designed to sink. In contrast to the show boating sports we see daily on the internet, the point is not to be seen, but to disappear. This is squirt boating. After its heyday in the early 1990s, the scene has all but disappeared. THE MYSTERY offers a rare glimpse into the obscure sport of squirt boating and the dedicated few who continue to keep the tradition alive. <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/83b3dd14f36e3a66d7d8965b11cc8518.jpg" width="280" style="display: inline; float: left; margin: 0px 1em 1em 0px;">Tommy Penick and Forest Woodward's paths crossed in happenstance, thousands of miles from their beloved rivers and shared home in the southeast. After exploring, reveling, and working together around the country, the boys finally found a story that summarized the humility and the heritage of the river scene in the southeast that they both dearly loved, and began working on The Mystery--trying to capture the essence of those who quite literally disappear.

THE MYSTERY

“Early 90’s, that was the heyday of squirt boating. Squirt boaters were everywhere. And then all of a sudden... they were gone.” It was the cutting edge of whitewater kayaking. But as the sport faded into obscurity, what happened to all those squirt boaters? Filmmaker Forest Whitaker will attend the screening.

When internationally renowned Haida carver Robert Davidson was 22 years old, he carved the first new totem pole on British Columbia’s Haida Gwaii in almost a century. On the 50th anniversary of the pole’s raising, Haida filmmaker Christopher Auchter steps easily through history to revisit that day when the entire village of Old Massett gathered to celebrate the event that would signal the rebirth of the Haida spirit. <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/8901e43030735bf4f93ceb6e76192d2c.jpg" width="283" style="display: inline; float: left; margin: 0px 1em 1em 0px;">Christopher Auchter grew up roaming the beaches and forests of the Haida Gwaii archipelago off Canada’s West Coast, and his art is rooted in the land and stories of the Haida people. His art practice is fuelled by his close connection to the natural environment, his adventures in forestry and commercial fishing, and the colourful people with whom he has lived and worked. He began using images to capture his feelings and impressions early on in his life, and today his filmmaking serves the same function. Auchter studied media arts at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver and graduated with honours in computer animation from Sheridan College in Ontario. His goal is to create films that are as engaging and entertaining as the many people and environments that have inspired him, to help facilitate genuine contact between the Haida people and the global community. Auchter’s directing debut was the multi-award-winning animated short The Mountain of SGaana. His previous projects include Daniel Janke’s How People Got Fire, Electronic Arts’ NHL Games and Nintendo’s Punch Out!, and he is a regular contributor to Loretta Todd’s TV series for children, such as Coyote Science and Tansi! Nehiyawetan. He has illustrated three children’s books, including Jordan Wheeler’s Just a Walk, a comic book by Richard Van Camp called Kiss Me Deadly, and a graphic novel by W.L. Liberman entitled The Ruptured Sky: The War of 1812.

He works outside in natural light crafting short stories and shooting commercial photography for outdoor brands such as Orvis, Columbia and Yeti. In his spare time, he makes comedic films about nothing of much importance and writes his own biography sections, desperately hoping he doesn’t sound too vain, but also hoping he doesn’t sound unimportant. He’s important, very important.

Today as a non-fiction filmmaker, photographer, and writer, Colin continues to be drawn to wide-open spaces and wild critters. His visual storytelling focuses on outdoor culture, backcountry recreation, ecology, conservation, wild foods, and rural communities.
