We begin onstage at a jazz club where the aging but incomparable Doc Marvell leads his band through the rollicking first song of their set, coaxing the crowd into an audience participation back-and-forth. But when Doc comes across a singer in the crowd whose voice competes with his own, a good-natured rivalry turns to poignant revelation. <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/c0063b083d9509220855f87198c54cad.jpg" width="333" style="display: inline; float: left; margin: 0px 1em 1em 0px;">Bryan PoyserA two-time Independent Spirit Award nominee, writer/director Bryan Poyser has made 3 features, numerous short films as well as projects for Comedy Central, the USA Network, Ridley Scott Associates and HBO. Bryan’s feature LOVERS OF HATE premiered in competition at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for the John Cassavetes Award at the 2011 Independent Spirit Awards. His first feature, DEAR PILLOW, was also nominated for a Spirit Award in 2005. Bryan’s latest feature, LOVE &amp; AIR SEX, premiered at the SXSW Film Festival and was released by Tribeca Films. Most recently, he wrote an episode of the Duplass Brothers' HBO series ROOM 104, which aired in 2020. Bryan lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and daughter and teaches filmmaking at Texas State University.

Tzipora lives with her mother and younger sister, Sarah, in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn. On a Sunday trip to the barn with Monica, their father’s new non-Jewish girlfriend, Tzipora is exposed to an entirely unfamiliar and enticing world. While she desperately wants to engage with it, she is held back by Sarah’s reluctance and her own sense of tradition. <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/dc361e0990ce58658a6a9891f0fcbb09.jpg" style="display: inline; float: left; margin: 0px 1em 1em 0px;" width="217">Roxy MoskowitzRoxy Moskowitz is a writer and director from Brooklyn. She is an upcoming MFA candidate at NYU Grad Film. She studied philosophy and comparative literature at Rutgers University and graduated with a B.A. in film production from Brooklyn College. She is currently freelancing and working on her projects at the same time.

She is a USC graduate and a Sundance interdisciplinary fellow. Her short film HUELLA was an official selection of the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and is being turned into a feature film after winning development funds with the inaugural WarnerMedia 150 and NewFilmmakers LA “New Narratives” Grant. Most recently, Gabriela won the NBC &amp; Telemundo best director award at the 2022 LALIFF and “Best New Filmmaker” at the annual NFMLA awards. She is currently directing a project to premiere on Disney+ in 2023 and her first film PAPI is now available to stream on HBO and HBO Max. Gabriela's work aims to draw cultural bridges that lead to the Caribbean and tell stories that authentically represent the people with whom she grew up.

HUELLA

Lilly, a 40-year old politician who fights against immigration, returns to the family house to take care of her elderly mother, Hanna, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. While there, she discovers a hidden side of her mother’s early history. <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/9479fc0b4c0ec3a393b1b095c684c530.jpg" style="display: inline; float: left; margin: 0px 1em 1em 0px;" width="319">Eyas AlmokdadSyrian-Belgian filmmaker, choreographer, and dancer Eyas Almokdad holds an M.A. in Audio-Visual Arts from The Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK), Belgium, 2021. He also holds an M.A. Transmedia - Audio-Visual Arts, LUCA School of Arts in Brussels, Belgium, 2013, and a B.A. in Ballet Dance from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, Damascus, Syria, 2005. Eyas has directed several films, including THE LAST TIME (2006), DANCERS AND WALLS (2010), DOUGH (2011), BLOODSHED (2012), MOTHER DAUGHTER (2012), UNDER THE TANK (co-directed with Orwa AlMokdad, 2014), THE OTHER HALF OF YOUR SHADOW (2015), and THE HANGAR (2019). Eyas' artistic work focuses on political and social issues, and researches contemporary art through cinema and theatre.

MOEDER DOCHTER

A film about a mother-daughter relationship, a lost memory, and the legacy of ancient wars that can bring two women together in a divided world.

Chetty and Paper (30s) are two brothers who refuse to grow up. But due to unforeseen circumstances, they are now in charge of their nephew, HALLELUJAH (13), a strange, book-quoting, black boy and their quiet niece, Lila (7). Sitting in the backyard, supposedly watching their niece and nephew, the two brothers become so distracted that they do not notice when Hallelujah attempts suicide. What follows is a funny, moving story about family and the people we have left behind and the people who are still with us. <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/e2e72a7d85c36fac120027020ede19e9.jpg" style="display: inline; float: left; margin: 0px 1em 1em 0px;" width="261">Victor GabrielGrowing up in poverty, Victor Gabriel realized that water in Corn Flakes doesn't taste as bad as you think it would. He wandered without a home before eventually ending up in Compton, CA. A black male writer/director and recent MFA graduate of AFI Conservatory, he has turned to filmmaking as a way for him to wrestle with his own suffering as well as the suffering of others. He holds an MA in Clinical Psychology and has been working as a Marriage and Family Therapist with survivors of trauma in Compton/Watts/South Central for the past several years. His short film, BLACK BOYS CAN'T CRY, is currently being shown in festivals. His favorite movie is Richard Donner’s SUPERMAN. He likes Red Vines and thinks Twizzlers are trash: big FACTS.

HALLELUJAH

After being stuck with the guardianship of their annoying, bookworm nephew, two brothers in Compton, CA, have to decide if they are willing to take on the responsibility of being caretakers.
