Every night, Josue has a nightmare of a mysterious evil man threatening to kill him if he doesn’t — “go home.” Every day in the real world, he deals with racism and anti-immigrant sentiment from his schoolmates, teachers, and strangers. Josue escapes his nightmares and frustrations by drawing a comic featuring a young LatinX superhero who defeats an angry villain made of ice.

To his cousin and best friend, Anita, Josue confides that in his dreams he has light powers that could fight back against the angry villain. If Josue could only stand up to him, he’s sure the nightmares would stop. But the next night, he’s still too afraid to fight back. Then, Josue starts to see the evil man from his nightmares in the daytime, and the line between dreaming and wide-awake begins to blur.
