Susan and Tom had a picture-perfect life in a small Oregon town when their world blew apart; losing two daughters in a tragic accident. In the midst of this shock, Susan remembers a conversation with their oldest daughter where she made known her wishes to be an organ donor. This provides a small amount of solace for Susan and Tom, and the donations set their lives on a new trajectory they could never have anticipated. From inconceivable loss came glimpses of joy - from the gifts their daughter was able to give, and from a new community of donor families they were now a part of. A DONATION CONVERSATION tells Susan and Tom’s story while exploring many other sides of transplant and donation. The film follows Dash, who is waiting for a life-saving kidney, and Marylin, who receives a transplant. Three dancers with disabilities find freedom through movement. Who does dance belong to? Danceable weaves together portraits of three dancers with disabilities: Lark, a deaf performer; Janpi, who uses a wheelchair; and Marci, a teacher with down syndrome. They reject societal limits imposed on them and through dance, interview, and archival materials, we learn of each performer's journey. They reveal the struggles of growing up disabled, how they found dance, and why they love it. Their journey’s exemplify how dance can serve as a tool for healing, liberation, and building community as they share their passion through teaching.

Whatever It Takes

Scientists can now edit the code of life (the genome) with relative ease and precision. Being able to change the DNA of human embryos has been hailed as a game changer for potentially curing some hereditary genetic disorders from all future generations in a family. However, for cultural, religious, or ethical reasons, some feel the manipulation of human embryos is a step too far for society. In the UK, as in most countries worldwide, it is currently illegal to perform genome editing on embryos that lead to pregnancy. Whilst the editing process is not currently 100% accurate, scientists predict that it soon will be. This means that public audiences should be brought into the conversation now so that policy makers can take account of societal perspectives.For a week in September 2022, 21 people with personal experience of genetic disease travelled from across the UK to the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge to sit as members of the UK Citizens' Jury on Genome Editing. A citizens jury typically involves a period of intense learning from experts, focused deliberations, voting on an ethical question and the writing of policy recommendations – and that is exactly what they did here.The aim was to provide an insight into the perspectives of a group of patients with inherited genetic conditions on what they think about the benefits, risks and wider harms emerging from the application of embryo genome editing. Their recommendations support policy makers, researchers and wider civil society to better understand informed public perspectives.The jurors welcomed the opportunity to have their voices heard, so much so that they agreed to be filmed and interviewed throughout the process. “Rollout“ is a vérité-style journey alongside residents of a tight-knit Kenyan community gripped by the “shadow pandemic of vaccine hesitancy,” as they face mounting pressure from a government they don’t trust, to get a vaccine they suspect may cause more harm than good. The story is anchored by keen observations from Laureen - a mother and immunization nurse in Kibera, East Africa’s largest informal settlement - as she grapples with her own personal decision to get the Covid-19 vaccine. As she weighs her options and manages misinformation-fueled doubts about whether the jab is safe for baby and herself, she must also carry out her Ministry of Health mandate to administer the vaccine to fellow Kibera residents. As rollout efforts expand across the county, Laureen and fellow healthcare workers visit with a colorful cast of community members - from a church pastor to a radio DJ - that share their perspectives on the vaccination efforts. Through their stories, we feel their visceral mistrust, seemingly sparked by the government’s deeply unpopular and aggressive early pandemic response, and further fueled by a relentless flood of misinformation and conspiracy theories. We also hear reference to the deeper historical context that further exacerbates this mistrust, namely the fraught relationship between community members and global health actors, and a global vaccination agenda designed by global elites that disregard the needs of Kibera's residents. By hearing from Laureen and her neighbors, we begin to see a vivid picture of the powerful and complex narratives and lived experiences driving the “shadow pandemic of vaccine hesitancy,” that stubbornly persists today, despite targeted efforts by the WHO and COVAX. As of November 2022, Kenya's population is currently &lt;20% vaccinated, despite the UN goal of 70% vaccination by September of this year.
