Off the Breaks

Travis Carpenter is 13, he lives with his basic sense of mobility in jeopardy. He has lived in the fear of breaking most of his life. He has known for as long as he can remember that one day he might lose his leg. From the age of 2 a tumor, caused by a rare disease called Neurofibromatosis, has been growing from his spine down his leg. He has broken his femur 3 times and after nearly 10 operations to reduce the tumor and strengthen his bones he is losing the fight to keep his leg. But Travis is a resilient character, wise beyond his age, and he takes every moment he can to be outside. And with a deep-seated love of speed, for Nascar in particular, he’s a boy who dreams to move fast. His challenge now is learning to walk for what he says is the 12th time.
