Two Filipina American sisters return home for Christmas and announce their plans to make their first pilgrimage to the Philippines, hoping this trip will reconnect them to their heritage. Three generations are confronted with the consequences of the pressure to assimilate to American society, and grapple with their failure to pass down a culture that never really felt theirs to begin with.
Director Quin Sotelo
The longing for reconciliation to a culture that is yours but you barely know is an experience that will speak to many second generation people, as well as a broader audience whose migrant journeys may be similar to ours. Through documentary, we share our real experiences as we confront the loss of our culture through assimilation. The multi-generational perspectives that are platformed allow for these different strands of access into the film, leaving the story open to connection.
The demand for more representation in cinema is not only about seeing all cultures and ethnicities on screen. It means seeing the varied spectrum of experiences and perspectives through stories that speak to the cultural nuances that vary within a community. Inheritance is about what being Filipino means to us, but it also explores a struggle to belong, to find ourselves within a community that we long to feel whole within. In this way, Inheritance accesses the universal through the specific, to tell an important, untold story.
