As the matriarch of the family, Kanley is fighting for her husband’s freedom from deportation alongside her five children. With the support of their Cambodian community in Oakland, CA, Kanley and her husband Roeun realize that home is where the heart is, where family can be together. Home is nowhere but here.
Director - Brandon Soun
Deportation is a form of state violence in our communities as it puts our folks through these cycles of displacement and separation. After fleeing the destruction of their homeland due to war and genocide in the 1970s, Cambodian refugees sought to form new beginnings in the U.S. and heal from their traumas. Over many decades, our folks were able to start businesses, families, and communities for themselves and succeeding generations to call home. However, with over-policing, unjust immigration policies, and the unchecked power of ICE, our communities continue to face the threat of separation that brought them here in the first place. With this resilient story of Kanley and Roeun’s family, I hope that audiences can leave inspired after seeing kids, elders, and community reclaim their agency and fight back to keep their families home.
