Field Notes #2: Natures places one vision of nature—a cinematic one in which no humans can be seen—into the physical space of its antithesis. It brings together two profoundly human spaces that deal with nature in very different ways—the city street and the broadcast natural history program—and asks the viewer to consider the space between them. This piece is from Field Notes, a series of eleven short films studying the place and meaning of nature in the Los Angeles area. Made during an artist residency in 2011 at the Echo Park Film Center in Los Angeles.

The cat I don't own races through windows between different spaces and times, and it disappears before finishing a sentence. Using outtakes and rushes (what "fur film" means in Mandarin) to redeem the affects in these images we produced for. The film is the first volume of an ongoing exchange diary project between Erica Sheu and Tzuan Wu. From the filming exercises. hand processing. editing and sound design, we experiment with different workflows of audio and visual between Taiwan and USA.

Full of apparitions, specters, and hauntings of an ailing natural world, we hear from Philomene, our narrator, as an illness sends her into a dizzying fever dream, blurring the boundaries between the real and the imagined.

The tobacco plant was introduced to Granada (Southern Spain) in 1923. It became a monoculture in the region until the end of the century. When the tobacco production stopped being profitable, the farmers switched to new crops like wheat, corn or asparagus. However, the lands of Granada are still replete with tobacco barns: large empty houses where the leaves used to be hanged to dry. They inhabit the landscape like architectural ghosts.
