20 short films are selected for the festival’s annual competition programme for animated short films from the Nordic and Baltic region. The films compete for the Golden Gunnar for best Nordic-Baltic Animated Short, Best Children’s Film, the Grand Prix and the Audience Award. The Short Film programme holds ten shorts with great artistic effort, from Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Lithuania and Estonia. Films accepted into Fredrikstad Animation Festival’s Short Film Competition programme are eligible to be nominated for the European Animation Awards. Age Limit: 12

A little man builds a house on a giant floating head. The man and the head develop a friendship, talk about their days and try to figure out what to do with their lives. Nilas Røpke Driessen (b. 1990) is a cartoonist and illustrator from Denmark. His work often delves into the humorous and absurd, and almost always has a hint of melancholy.

Eight white men meet by the campfire, at the bar and in the bathhouse. An animated satire based on interviews of people from the epicentre of norms and privileges. Part 2: Collective shame in the jacuzzi at the bathhouse. Malin Erixon's films have been screened all over the world – for example at the Sundance Film Festival and Ottawa International Animation Festival – as well as at places like Studion at the Modern Museum of Art in Stockholm. She has received many recognitions for her work including a nomination for the Swedish Film Academy Award, Guldbagge.

The Assembly – Interviews from the middle of everything (Part 2)

An old cosmonaut lives the same kind of life now, in his flat in a concrete panel apartment building, as he did in his youth in a space station. As before, he still carries out heroic missions and misses his close relatives, who he left behind on his home planet. His close relatives see the situation altogether differently. Kaspar Jancis was born in Tallinn in 1975. He has been part of the creative core of several rock groups, writing song lyrics. He enrolled in the Turku Arts and Media School in Finland in 1997 to study animation under the guidance of Priit Pärn.

🏆 Winner of the Grand Prix! 🏆 Jury Statement: Freeze Frame&nbsp;takes the viewer on a journey through the deepest layers of arctic ice showing gradually more complex beings getting excavated from dark waters. The animals trapped in ice cubes while in motion, show the history of all living things. The animation technique and the storyline perfectly match the contrast between persistence and fragility. The jury viewed this film as a dystopian metaphor of human greed and thoughtlessness. Freeze frame: the most absurd technique since the invention of the moving image. Through an elaborate process of duplicating the same image over and over again, it creates the illusion of stillness. In this stop motion film, identical figures perform the hopeless task of preserving blocks of ice. The repetitive movements reanimate the animals captured inside. Soetkin Verstegen is an independent film maker and animator from Brussels. Next to her personal work, she works as a freelancer for stop-motion films and series, and teaches animation workshops.

Freeze frame

A story about people of flesh and blood, torn apart by illusions named border, nation and race. Star Bazancir is a part-time independent animation filmmaker living in Stockholm. He is credited for the animated short film Conversation (2018).

Scenes of the dance of life and death in the lush tropical nature as it is lived day by day, year by year, by the magical creatures that inhabit the wilderness of our dreams. Anu-Laura Tuttelberg graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts with a M.A. in animation in 2013. Her first animation, Fly Mill (2012) has screened at about one hundred festivals around the world and won more than 20 prizes including 6 Grand Prix. She has produced set designs for several stop-motion shorts and gives workshops in stop-motion animation.

Winter in the Rainforest

A lullaby before the great disaster. Two pigeons visit a zoo without animals, a snail has its blood pressure taken at the doctor's, in the CERN laboratory something has gone terribly wrong. Six moments from our age, like memories of the world we leave behind. Niki Lindroth von Bahr is an artist and animation director based in Stockholm. Her award winning short films The Burden (2017), Bath House (2014) and Tord and Tord (2010) have been screened at festivals like Cannes, Berlinale, Toronto and Sundance. Niki is also a sculptor and a costume designer, and has worked with artists like Fever Ray and David Bowie.

What does the mermaid do in a jar?! Will she ever be free? Tomi Malkki aka Malakiaswas born in a swamp-area in Finland. As a kid he liked bananas and taking sun baths on the balcony.

The essence of our time under the magnifying glass. The starting point was to create a visually interesting and intense, kaleidoscopically abundant work that could be set together with the pioneering electric composition of Jukka Ruohomäki (b.1947). The sound material was created in 1970 with the DIMI-synthesizer designed by Erkki Kurenniemi. Niina Suominen has graduated from the Arts Academy at Turku in 2004. She also has been trained as a blacksmith, animal nurse and a forest worker. She works as a film director and media artist using traditional animation techniques requiring manual work. Her works have been shown at various festivals both in Finland and abroad.

What Time Is?

Eccentric inventor Jaan is about to fulfil his dreams of flying high in the sky when the spirit of Leonardo da Vinci, the Renaissance luminary, joins him in his aspirations. However, heading towards the horizon, where dreams and reality meet, as an elegant winged creature, is Jaan's neglected wife Liisa. Riho Unt (b. 1956) is an acclaimed screenwriter, director and lecturer from Estonia. He has been working as a director and artist in the film studio Nukufilm, and as an associate professor in the scenography department of the Estonian Academy of Arts for many years. His puppet films have won numerous international awards.
