20 short films are selected for the festival’s annual competition programme for animated short films from the Nordic and Baltic region. The films compete for the Golden Gunnar for best Nordic-Baltic Animated Short, Best Children’s Film, the Grand Prix and the Audience Award. The Young Audience programme consists of ten short films from Denmark, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden and Iceland, which will entertain the young audiences. Films accepted into Fredrikstad Animation Festival’s Short Film Competition programme are eligible to be nominated for the European Animation Awards. Age Limit: 6

Merry building blocks want to dance with you! Däncing düplös is a musician and an animator playing with sound, image, and phonotropic loops on a record player. Kristian Pedersen (b. 1980) is a designer and animator who works at Mikrofilm in Oslo, makes shorts, does commissions and plays dice. Previous works experiment with technique and abstract visuals. Christoffer Schou (b. 1975) is a musician and producer, founder of pop group Remington Super 60, and composes music for film and TV.

Ali's grandmother is always nagging him to sit still, but he can't because he has to save all the animals in space and drive a car with a dinosaur. Sofie Edvardsson is a director and illustrator from Sweden. She is the creative director of studio Soja, that she founded together with Jakob Nyström in 2010. Her debut film Topp 3 premiered at the Frameline International LGBT Film Festival, before winning awards at Outfest, Tromsø International Film Festival and Fredrikstad Animation Festival.

A really great film that shows that you can trust Santa. The music is very good and its nicely animated. A hungry fox hunts for food on a cold winter night. He sneaks into a small farm to steal a snack when he is caught by the Tomten who guards the farm. Yaprak Morali and Are Austnes have been working in the animation industry for more than 20 years. They are now both working at Qvisten Animation.

Zara has never heard of a Miss Competition, she only knows Patricia says it’s a way to decide who the prettiest girl in class is. When Zara’s dad brings a bucket of moose poop things take an unexpected turn. Bjørn Sortland has written more than 60 books and has been published in 24 countries, while co-director Nils Johan Lund has worked as a motion graphics designer and director since 2001. They have collaborated on two animated shorts before this latest film about the little zombie girl Zara.

Elsa is afraid to sleep. Actually she has not slept a wink for thirty years. Early one morning when she’s sitting at the kitchen table, she finds an unwelcome guest underneath her sofa. The creature turns out to be none other than the Night itself. Jöns Möllgren (b. 1976) is active as a director, illustrator and writer, with an M.A. in animation from Royal College of Art in London. He has directed a number of short films and commercials, and has written and illustrated several picture books for kids.

A film about a grandmother desperately waiting for a visit. Vykintas Labanauskas has studied screenwriting and animation, while Dominyka Adomaityte is currently studying sound design at FAMU. Since 2017 they are collaborating on animation projects. Grandma’s pancakes is their first stop-motion film.

🏆 Winner of the Short Film Competition! 🏆 Jury Statement: Yes-People&nbsp;is a tightly knit story of diverse human characters that are bound together by the restrictions of time and space. The efficient usage of pace and visual information makes it a rediscovery with every rewatch. The film is unusually light hearted for the Nordic-Baltic animation scene, capturing the jury’s benevolence with much of the same humour and unpretentiousness that the characters share between themselves. One morning an eclectic mix of people face the everyday battle – such as work, school and dish-washing. As the day progresses, their relationships and capacity to cope are tested. Gísli Darri Halldórsson was born in Iceland in 1978 and graduated with a B.A. (Hons) from the Irish School of Animation, Dublin in 2007. Gísli has been a professional animator since 2007, working in England, Ireland, Germany and Iceland on feature films, short films, TV-series, commercials and music videos.

Yes-People

This is a poetic fable about a young depressed girl. Someone who wants to stay invisible cares about her and tries to help by sacrificing a part of himself. Anita Killi received her education in graphic design, animation and documentary film from Volda University College and Kunst og Håndverksskolen in Oslo. She has been running the animation company Trollfilm AS in Dovre for 25 years, and is best known for the cutout/multiplan short films The Hegde of Thorns and Angry Man from 2009.

Mother Didn't Know

All of history as told by the cat. Jacob Stålhammar worked as a musician and sound engineer for years, touring with Swedish alternative bands. He also did stand-up comedy for a while. Now he mostly makes short films, electronic music and illustrations and works part time as a psychologist. He has a PhD in neuropsychology.

Cats vs. Progress

🏆 Winner of the Audience Award! 🏆 God is a single parent and amateur programmer. He’s working on project "Earth" but never seems to get a break from the kids. One day, though, he finally reaches a breakthrough. Magnus Møller co-founded Tumblehead with Peter Smith in 2011. In addition to directing projects he is also often acting as the art director and is always pushing the house style – a mix of UPA and 50’s cartoons blended with new 3D design concepts.
