Raising ASD is a short documentary drama exploring motherhood and autism spectrum disorder. The script was inspired by real interviews. Portrayed by four actors, these stories parallel images of unattainable idyllic family life to convey the societal pressures on mothers and how this manifests in raising special needs children. The four characters show multiple perspectives and offer a unique and honest glimpse at what it’s really like raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder.

It’s “Treat Day” and Deborah has cash in her pocket and a stocked tuck shop in the lobby of her building. Overwhelmed with options, the cashier steers her towards a candy and cassette tape deal. In awe of being reunited with music from decades ago, Deborah doubts she’ll remember the beloved lyrics. With the concierge’s encouragement, Deborah presses play on the tape player as she leaves for her daily walk in the park.If you’ve ever heard that song from when you were young, you’ll recognize Deborah’s joy at being reunited with memories of her youth. She’s virtually transported back in time as she enjoys the sun on her face and the breeze in her hair. The friendly hello of a couple on a park bench. The attention of a friendly dog. The cheekiness of children that charm her candy away. And we are left to wonder, whose “Treat Day” is it?

Two Days in the Village

Aino and her mother Oili are cycling to the community garden cottage. They have long colourful ribbons in their bike baskets. Oili is memorising Ainos childhood and how she was bullied by some boys. Oili tells how girl wasn't allowed to defend herself.Aino's other mom Jaana is waiting at the cottage, where they are going to celebrate Aino's and Oona's promise ceremony. Ribbons are part of the ceremony. Oili walks among the celebrating people with a videocamera and records moments from the party. Guests send their love to the couple through the camera. In addition we experience a communial moment in a toilet. We ponder the themes of body peace and we also have a conversation about attention seeking and what it means to be a girl. In the middle of a joyful celebration we wonder about growing into a woman, what it's like to be a mom and how we see and treat each other.
