Directors' Bio: Agathe Sénéchal, Alicia Massez, Elise Debruyne, Flavie Carin and Théo Duhautois have graduated from the Pôle 3D school (Roubaix, France). For single cellular organisms, life likely begins and ends without a moment for reflection. It’s a didinium eat paramecium world. Retired epidemiologist Deb Kapell, however, immortalizes these tiny creatures with her microscopy art. Forbidden Pond (13 minutes) accompanies Deb while she pursues her hobby and creates her own meaning of life through the relationships she builds with microscopic inhabitants of this world. Forbidden Pond is a celebration of both science and artistry, and appreciates natural beauty that is both accessible and inaccessible. His most recent short doc Forbidden Pond has played at festivals including DocNYC, Big Sky, Woods Hole, and Bend, and won the Outstanding Documentary Award at Art of Brooklyn Film Fest. Eric’s other film and photography work has been featured in The New Yorker, the Guardian, Vice, AdWeek, Roads &amp; Kingdoms, and in Spike Lee’s NYC EPICENTERS documentary series. Eric was a Fulbright Scholar to China and a UnionDocs Summer Documentary Lab fellow. He is also the Director of the Brooklyn Documentary Club and a member of Filmshop.

Forbidden Pond

A turn-of-the-century former candy factory in Brooklyn is more than just a space for artists to create—it's a tender ecosystem held together by the particular, magnetic force of the building's owner. Director's Bio:<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/2c4cce45c91809d35e1bdf5fe2fcd5fe.jpg" style="display: inline; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 1em 1em;" width="222">Cory Jacobs and Jason Schmidt came up in the photography world in New York City: Cory as an editor and curator, Jason as a photographer. Jason has photographed over 800 artists. They wanted to expand on the stories they were telling through photography. They started Cottage Eight Films in 2015 to make shorts about art and culture. This is their first documentary.

The Candy Factory

A short documentary about Heidi Schwegler, a wildly imaginative artist who lives and works in the Mojave Desert where she makes “beautiful objects about messy and depressing subject matter.”&nbsp;Schwegler faces a crisis in her art practice, goes on a journey, and is then profoundly affected by a surprising flip in perception. After working several years as an advertising photographer, Stephen ventured into the world of filmmaking. The short documentary ‘Existential Action Thriller,’ created for a documentary production class at Portland Community College, marks his debut as a director.&nbsp;

An artist faces a crisis, goes on a journey and is profoundly affected by a surprising flip in perception.

In the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, LA-based ceramicist Jessie DuBois spends cherished moments with her grandmother, Marcia. Their deep bond is evident as they engage in a heartfelt conversation about life, death, art, and the family legacy of creating pottery—a tradition Marcia began with her husband Bruce in the 1960s. As a meaningful way of honoring this heritage, Jessie forages for clay amongst the ruins of her grandmother’s home, which was tragically destroyed by a wildfire in 2020. Through her art, Jessie keeps the essence of her family and the spirit of her grandmother's home beautifully alive. Directors' Bio:<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/22fea46eb180935fc8609488bf9dde69.png" style="display: inline; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 1em 1em;" width="306">Christian Klein is a cinematographer, with A Kind Favor being his co-directorial debut. Originally from the Bay Area where he began his film career, he is now based in Los Angeles focusing on documentary, narrative, and branded films. Mattias Evangelista is a director and editor currently based in Los Angeles. As a filmmaker, he strives to tell human stories and brings passion and empathy to every project he works on. His short films have screened in prestigious festivals around the globe and he’s a seven-time Vimeo Staff Pick award winner.

A Kind Favor

On the magical coast of Central California, a grandmother reflects on a life filled with art, love, and tragedy.

Johnny Bencomo, a 75-year-old cowboy musician, barely puts food on his (and his dog Lady's) table by playing gigs at the country bar in town. But a stranger hears his 18-string guitar one night, and gets in touch about an unusual private gig. A tale of the West based on Johnny's personal experience as a country musician in Tombstone, Arizona – Deep in My Heart is a Song is a heartfelt desert story about finding soul-level connection in unexpected places. Director's Bio:<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/a085854d350b58fbf359827bbee2a022.jpg" style="display: inline; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 1em 1em;" width="207">Jonathan Pickett is an Emmy-nominated creative producer / director. Most recently, his short documentary Chicken Stories won the jury prize for Artistic Vision at Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, after which it was acquired by The New Yorker and selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick.
