Over 89% of the residents of Alaska’s Chilkat River watershed fish for salmon to survive, but they may lose their 2,000-year-old Tlingkit heritage if Big Mining explores for precious ores. “Accidents will happen” and downstream salmon populations could be destroyed. Some locals might land good paychecks initially, but as one states, “Mineral exploration is like racetrack gambling … on crack.” It’s a high-stakes game.
