Honorable Mention If Not Us Then Who? For almost half a century, oil companies Occidental Petroleum (1971-2000) and subsequently Pluspetrol (2000-2015) have devastated the forests and rivers of the northern Peruvian Amazon. Their pipelines have collapsed and degraded, leaking oil and heavy metals into the land at over 1,963 contamination sites. Indigenous Quechua, Achuar, and Kichwa communities have suffered extreme environmental, health, cultural, social, and economic impacts as a result. In 2020, indigenous leaders have taken their case to the Netherlands, where Pluspetrol transferred its headquarters in 2000, bringing a complaint to the OECD.

Guardians of Ua Huka follows Tuhuna, our guardian, as he explores this remote island, taking in its ancient culture and unique wildlife. Situated in the remote Marquesas islands of French Polynesia, this island is the only inhabited island in the region not to have been infested with black rats, which not only affect island livelihoods, but would also kill the native bird species that are found no where else. The film looks at the interwoven life of islanders on the island with the natural world around them, living both with and off of the land, air and sea.

Her life story, filled with hardships and setbacks, also reveals the resolute temperament that characterizes her and many other women in Madagascar - and the world.

When he looks up dreamily, he sees pigeons flying to heaven. He misses his father, who died a year ago, and who also loved these birds. Reshat cautiously approaches the best pigeon keeper in the village. Will he teach him to train pigeons? Reshat plays with his friends, visits his father’s grave, looks at old photos with his grandmother and does his homework because his mother tells him to. But he prefers to be with the pigeon keeper. While Reshat is learning all about pigeons, he discovers what he really wants.
