If Not Us Then Who?

For almost half a century, oil companies Occidental Petroleum (1971-2000) and subsequently Pluspetrol (2000-2015) have devastated the forests and rivers of the northern Peruvian Amazon. Their pipelines have collapsed and degraded, leaking oil and heavy metals into the land at over 1,963 contamination sites. Indigenous Quechua, Achuar, and Kichwa communities have suffered extreme environmental, health, cultural, social, and economic impacts as a result. In 2020, indigenous leaders have taken their case to the Netherlands, where Pluspetrol transferred its headquarters in 2000, bringing a complaint to the OECD.
