In present-day Tokyo, high school students Hayato and Ami are in a relationship.　One day, after a quarrel over a trivial matter, Hayato has an accident and is knocked unconscious.　Ami blames herself for him being in a coma. In Hayato’s hospital room, she finds "Pécopin and the Devil" by Victor Hugo, and she starts reading it.

Pécopin, Lord of Sooneck Castle, an expert hunter and a handsome man, is betrothed to Bauldour, the beautiful daughter of the Lord of Falkenburg Castle. Three days before his wedding, Pécopin goes hunting and his hunting skills become recognized by the Count of the Court. This leads him to travel all over the world as he rises through the diplomatic ranks. On his travels he wins battles against various monsters, including the Beetle Man, the Grasshopper Man, the bronze giant Nimrod and the devil Asmodée. But on his return to Bauldour, a startling truth awaits him.

現代の東京、交際中の高校生、隼人と亜美はある日、些細な事で喧嘩してしまう。別れた後に隼人は交通事故に遭い、意識不明に……。自分を激しく責めながら憔悴する亜美は、ふと隼人の鞄に入っていたヴィクトル・ユーゴ―著の『美男ペコパンと悪魔』を手に取り、読み始める。

ゾンネック城主のペコパンは、狩りの名人で、美男子だった。ペコパンは、ファルケンブルク城主の美しき娘・ボールドゥールと婚約する。ボールドゥールとの婚礼を3日後に控えた日、ペコパンは狩りに出かけ、その狩りの腕前が宮中伯に認められ、どんどん出世していつしか世界中を旅することに……。カブトムシ人間、バッタ人間、青銅の巨人ニムロデ、悪魔アスモデなど様々な怪物との対峙を乗り越えボールドゥールの許に帰ってきたペコパンに、驚愕の事実が待ち受けていた……。
