A 93 year old professor recounts how he and nearly 100,000 Jews were saved by Raoul Wallenberg, who was once a student at the University he had taught at for 50 years.


Years later, a group of professors and local activists, created the Wallenberg Medal and Lecture to honor people who have similar qualities to those of Raoul Wallenberg and to learn from them.


Director/Writer JOHN J. VALADEZ is Professor of Documentary filmmaking at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is a Peabody Award winning filmmaker whose films have received two national Emmy nominations. He has directed a dozen documentary films for primetime national broadcast on PBS and CNN over the past 20 years Valadez has tackled such diverse subjects as the false imprisonment of a leader of the Black Panther (Passin’ It On for POV/PBS); Latino gangs in Chicago (Making Peace for PBS); Latinos in World War II (Latino Americans for PBS); the re-segregation of America’s schools (Beyond Brown for PBS); the history of Latino civil rights (The Longoria Affair for Independent Lens/PBS); the evolution of Chicano music (Latin Music USA for PBS); art and the genocide of Native Americans in the Southwest (The Last Conquistador for POV/PBS); the deportation of U.S. military veterans (American Exile for Voces/PBS); and the lynching of Mexican Americans (The Head of Joaquin Murrieta for PBS) to name a few.
