Sometimes, if you want to become a hero, you just have to fly. Innovative handmade embroidery animation.

Juror's comments: The Bulgarian short film Marmalade offers an unusual way to animate a movie. I love the concept of using handmade embroidery to bring life to characters. They all appear pretty realistic with emotions. The story has a good message that teaches young kids to aim high and fly high.

The plot begins with two kids enjoying their sweet treat when a bird snatches it away from the girl. The boy works hard to get the girl's treat back, but in vain as the bird flies away. The boy attempts to fly and chase the bird, which in turn both become good friends as they enjoy the flight.

I love the story; it’s very inspiring for kids and adults equally. The plotline shows how the kids can aim higher and uses the analogy of flying to explain that. The story expresses the joy one can get from following their dreams.

The 2D animation is excellent and whimsical. The backgrounds are fun, from breezy grassy fields, to flying around the sun. The attention to details - the blue clouds, the grass, the roots - really got me attached to the movie. The background music is quite appropriate, which is critical since there is no dialogue. The music helps give clarity to the story. My favorite part is the animation. The whole movie is captivating. Every scene is well developed. The animation shows the characters’ emotions as the plot develops. Very enjoyable.

The message of this short film is to aim high and fly high. Enjoy the peace and joy that follows it.

I give Marmalade 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 4 to 12, plus adults. Reviewed by Laxmi D., KIDS FIRST! Juror.
