HBO® APA Visionaries is a short film competition showcasing emerging Asian and Pacific Islander American filmmakers. To honor Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and our filmmakers, HBO is celebrating Asian and Pacific Islander communities and its stories by streaming winning films from previous years. Come gather in strength as we watch #HBOVisionaries shorts throughout the month.

On Friday, May 29th at 2pm PT, join us for the HBO APA Visionaries Roundtable Conversation, where we discuss the HBO APA Visionaries program and have a heartfelt conversation on the multiple and evolving layers of the APA filmmaker experience of today. E! host and correspondent Erin Lim, hosts Visionary finalists from across three classes, Dinh Thai (MONDAY), Maritte Go (REMITTANCE), Nirav Bhakta (HALWA), and Gayatri Bajpai (HALWA), joined by actress and filmmaker Sujata Day, for a conversation on what it means to be a storyteller and a leader. Twelve-year-old Adeline Tang struggles to navigate America’s adult playground and keep her mother’s gambling under control, all for the promise of that perfect family Christmas holiday once her father arrives. But as the days unfold, Adeline realizes that growing up might not hold all the excitement she’d been hoping for.
This film was a finalist for the 2017 HBO APA Visionaries Short Film Competition, and premiered at the 2017 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival.
Tiffanie Hsu
Tiffanie Hsu is a writer and director whose short film WONDERLAND was a finalist in the HBO APA Visionaries Short Film Competition. The feature adaptation recently participated in the Sundance and Film Independent Screenwriters Labs. Her feature documentary, WATERSCHOOL premiered at Sundance and is currently streaming on Netflix. Hsu is an alumna of AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women. She has a BA from Harvard and an MFA in Directing and Screenwriting from UCLA, where she received the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans. She is currently writing/directing STRINGS, a musical romantic comedy about a violin virtuoso, and developing a series based on the SF Spider Man thief.
