In 2017, Ai Weiwei released Human Flow, an epic documentary about the global refugee crisis spanning 23 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. Since then, the crisis has only worsened, and rising anti-immigrant sentiments have been stoked by populist politicians. Having fled war, poverty and persecution, and travelled treacherous routes to reach safe harbour, refugees now endure an overburdened aid system and intensifying nationalism as they await sanctuary. Compiled from over 900 hours of unused footage from Human Flow, The Rest is a deeply personal film focused on the everyday lives of refugees in Europe.
