And to kick off the festival on December 1, 2020, at 20:00 EST, join us for a livestreamed conversation with Syrian-Canadian filmmaker Amar Chebib, hosted by Maryam Shah from the Toronto Star.
The proceeds from this event will be donated to Matthew House Ottawa, a shelter offering essential support to refugee claimants.

To introduce our Voices from Syria program, we invited Rula Amin, Senior Communications Advisor and spokesperson at UNHCR’s Regional Bureau for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), to say a few words about the current state of the Syria crisis.
Rula leads UNHCR’s communications work in the MENA region, which hosts more than 16 million people of concern to UNHCR, including refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced and stateless persons. Before joining UNHCR in 2017, Rula worked as a correspondent for Al Jazeera in Beirut. She started her journalism career with CNN in Jerusalem, and travelled across the region to cover the most critical moments of war and peace, as well as the political and social consequences of major events in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.
