In 1941, when Flora was thirteen, Japanese forces attacked the city of Baguio, Philippines, where she lived with her parents and eleven siblings. She was separated from her family and was forced to flee into the neighboring mountainside where she was housed, fed, and protected by the indigenous peoples of the neighboring mountain ranges. Flora survived unthinkable odds during the war—living in a cavernous air raid shelter and eating nothing but boiled carrots for years. Now Flora is 94 years old, suffers from dementia, and requires around-the-clock care to perform everyday tasks. Faced with the reality that his grandmother’s life could end at any moment, Carlo explores her story further by interviewing relatives, family friends, and consulting with WWII historians. Through his investigation, Carlo learns about his family’s history but also discovers why these stories went untold for so long and the lasting effects of her experiences.
