- NoteThe filmmakers, Akanksha Cruczynski and Felicia Ferrara, made Close Ties to Home Country as their joined thesis project at Columbia College Chicago to obtain their Master of Fine Arts degrees in Cinema Directing and Creative Producing respectively. The film is inspired by director Akanksha Cruczynski’s dogsitting experiences and features her real sister. Close Ties won the Albert P. Weisman Grant, an award of $2000 awarded to outstanding student projects, and successfully raised over $8000 in a crowdfunding campaign on Seed & Spark. It is a Finalist for the 2021 Student Academy Awards, was on the Shortlist for the BAFTA Student Awards 2021, won the Audience Award and a cash prize of $1250 at its world premiere at Aspen Shortsfest 2021 and won the Comedy Award and a cash prize of $1000 at Indy Shorts International Film Festival. It has played at several other Academy-Award qualifying festivals including Telluride Film Festival, and won awards at numerous other festivals.
