Hong Kong was a British colony until the UK ceded the city to China in 1997. China promised Hong Kong at least fifty years of political autonomy, but they violated this promise shortly after the handover.

Hongkongers fought back. Over the course of a decade and a half, protests evolved from lawful marches led by established political figures to militant uprisings led by fervent localists. Hong Kong’s struggle is an inspiration to people fighting oppression around the world.
