Academy scientist David Keller, PhD (Head of Fisheries Department) talks about American Shad and River Herring in the Delaware River Basin.
David Keller, PhD, Head of Fisheries, Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University
Dr. David Keller is head of the Fisheries Department and has been with the Academy since 2004. Over almost 20 years, using various gears ranging from electrofishing to seining, Dave has inventoried waters throughout the Delaware River Basin to determine the occurrence of American Shad and River Herring. He has also studied the effects of dam removal for improved passage of American Shad and evidence of spawning success. Dave recently coauthored a manuscript evaluating the dissolved oxygen requirements of American Shad and other species in the Delaware River. Dave is currently working with Academy scientists and regional partners, such as The Nature Conservancy, on a project to improve spawning and rearing habitat for American Shad and River Herring in the Delaware River Basin. This work involves evaluating barriers and habitats throughout the watershed to identify key sites for American Shad and River Herring restoration. On a personal note, seining for emigrating young-of-year American Shad and River Herring at night, on the Delaware River in early fall, has always been one of Dave's most memorable experiences. Additionally, he enjoys fishing recreationally for American Shad and River Herring with friends and family.
