At a time when so many are trying to erase our communities, these filmmakers are making sure our stories are forever stamped into history. By living boldly and authentically, we leave an imprint that ripples through generations. This block is proof that we were here and we always will be.
Southern Son Shine is an intimate short documentary illuminating the lives of Black queer men living with HIV in the American South. Through the voices of men representing different generations and lived experiences, the film explores what it means to navigate identity, stigma, love, resilience, and the evolving realities of HIV.
Moving beyond statistics and traditional public health narratives, Southern Son Shine centers the humanity of its storytellers, their vulnerability, wisdom, joy, and determination to live fully. Their stories reveal both how far we have come and the work that remains in dismantling the silence and stigma surrounding HIV, particularly within Black and queer communities.
Rooted in Southern storytelling and intergenerational reflection, Southern Son Shine is ultimately a testament to visibility, survival, and the power of telling our own stories. It invites audiences to see Black queer men living with HIV not simply through the lens of diagnosis, but as whole people whose lives continue to shine.
