Content Notes: Discussion of mental health/epilepsy. Synopsis: A moving image and sound portrait of the aura; seizures in focused parts of the brain that result in sensory, physical and emotional disturbances, sometimes acting as warnings for convulsive seizures that may occur. Told through the voices of individuals who experience this phenomena, the film provides an intimate discussion on the different forms of aura experienced, the social stigma around these and the potential positive impact it can make on artistic expression. Artist Bio: Heather E Andrews is an award winning disabled and neurodivergent experimental film maker from East Ayrshire, Scotland. A BBC Arts/Lux Scotland Now and Next selected artist in 2020, she began exploring the use of 16mm moving image and analogue sound making in her work, creating sonic and image worlds intertwined with poetry and spoken word. She is also an award winning sound designer in film and television as well as regular collaborator with other experimental film makers.Heather was awarded the Create Inclusion award through Creative Scotland in 2020, where she developed her work "In Erms of Clay". The film toured many festivals on the 2021 festival circuit, and was a chosen work for Lux Scotland's One Work series. Her co-directed short with Julia Parks, "HAAF", was nominated for Best Short film at EIFF in 2022. Heather was part of the 2022 Little Pictures, a commission through Screen Scotland and GMAC film, to develop her micro budget short, "This Werewolf Complex". Artist Bio: Mara Ramirez is an Ignatz nominated interdisciplinary artist and educator from San Francisco, California. They play with time, abstraction, and the action of mark making as a means of distorting &amp; clarifying their own experiences through the filter of emotion and memory. Employing both comics and animation, they ruminate on the body and its place in the natural world through metaphor, fantasy, and realism alike. Through the lens of a child experiencing their first death of a pet, this video work muses on the ways that humankind distances itself from the truth of our animality, and how the digital realm we have fortified in the past 20 years pretends to be separate from our physical plane.

Content Notes: Contains a sequence with very quick editing and loud volume. Synopsis: A Brief History of Circles is about the experience of autism beyond language. Through repetition and circularity we find a sense of equilibrium, yet sometimes this escalates to sensory overload. The film seeks to go further than autistic representation through character, embodying autistic experience through sound and image to create a multi-sensory experience revolving around a simple hyperfixation: the circle. Artist Bio: Georgia Kumari Bradburn is an award winning and BIFA-longlisted filmmaker, writer and programmer based in London, UK. She is a co-director of the The Stimming Pool, and a co-founder of the curatorial collective Stims. Online Premiere

Night Holding Still [CC] [AD]

Dreaming a way through shame and chronic illness.

Synopsis: For those living with invisible illness we often find ourselves repetitively returning to rest. Resting Place captures the filmmaker returning to bed, reflecting on their experience living with chronic illness.The work utilizes multiple exposures to illustrate the ritual of rest. For many living with chronic illness we bide our time waiting in bed. The bed offers a safe space. A space that is sacred – a place of recovery and rest. Although the bed can offer a place of healing, it simultaneously isolates us. The loneliness of being bed bound leaves us longing. The relief of return contrasted with hindrance to stay. The hours away fluctuate with each passing day, but my return is imminent. The ritual is inevitable. Resting Place was shot on 16mm film using in-camera double exposures and was hand processed in the darkroom. It's important to Appleby’s practice to work intimately with the images they create to feel a deep connection between their physical body and the film body. Artist Bio: Brittney Appleby (they/she) is a queer interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker with a primary focus in experimental analogue film and photo techniques. Brittney holds a Diploma in Visual Arts from Langara College and graduated with their BFA majoring in Visual Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Spring 2021. She currently resides on the unceded territories of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam First Nations, otherwise known as Vancouver, BC. Brittney’s work spans across multiple analogue film and photo mediums including 16mm, super 8 motion picture film and 35mm, 120, large format, polaroid, cyanotype and wet plate collodion photography. They are inspired by the materiality of analogue practices and incorporate their background in painting, drawing and printmaking into their films and photographs. Common themes Brittney explores in their work are the body, chronic illness, trauma and memory. They see celluloid film as an alternative to the canvas and believe that distressing film through experimental manipulation techniques works as an excellent metaphor for the deteriorating and diseased body. Brittney is passionate about accessibility in the arts and has worked to teach multiple low-barrier workshops over the last several years. She has offered one on one darkroom mentorship with other emerging artists and taught at organizations such as Still Moon Arts, EPFC North, Slice of Life, Cineworks, Dawson City International Short Film Festival, and Broadway Youth Resource Centre.
