One of the great British comedy films, Playing Away satirises racial tension through that most genteel of sports: Cricket.

As a part of the "Third World Week", the Sneddington Cricket team invite a Brixton-based team of West Indian heritage to play a friendly game on their Suffolk grounds. Horace Ové (PressureA Hole in Babylon) drops his neo-realist style in favour of a zany comedy of manners that burrows into the British psyche.

A cast including Norman Beaton, Gary Beadle, and Ross Kemp have great fun chewing on screenwriter Caryl Phillips’ dialogue, which observes picturesque little England with an ironic eye. A well-loved, but rarely seen gem.

Presented in partnership with The Twelve30 Collective, an independent film curating initiative screening the best of Caribbean film.
