Lindi, a retired singer (inspired by Miriam Makeba) looks back at her life when the remains of a murdered apartheid-era policeman, Kobus, turn up 60 years after the massacre in Sharpeville. But how much will Lindi reveal about what happened to Kobus? 1960, which opened the 2022 Durban International Film Festival and also won the award for best South African feature film, takes the audience back to a tragic time in South African history. Through the rich characters and wonderful nostalgic music performed in the jazz clubs of Sophiatown, the film humanises the suffering of the time and makes for compelling watching. Despite Lindi’s rise to fame, she remains haunted by the trauma of her youth.
