Razor Ruckus was conceived as a first project for Studio Neera, an upstart Vancouver-based animation studio, but the story is based on a real life event that happened to studio co-founder and producer Noushin Emami.
In this conversation, director APPI outlines how a bizarre story of a possessed razor turned into the studio’s first short film, the process of producing the movie in a short period of time and what’s next for them and the studio.
Razor Ruckus won the Director’s Prize award at SPARK ANIMATION 2024.

APPI is a french filmmaker, who co-founded the Vancouver production house: Studio Neera in August 2023, with Noushin Emami.
They have an educational background in Directing for Movie and Television from ECTQ in Quebec, Video Editing from EICAR in Paris and 2D Classical Animation VFS in Vancouver.
Razor Ruckus was born as the first short film of the production house. This short film is APPI's post-graduation directorial debut. They also wrote and edited the film.
They are now producing another short film called Carpet Weavers directed by Noushin Emami, and their goal is to bring poignant, and culturally impactful stories to light.

Marina has been writing and discussing film for over 15 years, first on a personal blog, followed by a decade-long tenure on the now retired Row Three. In 2008, she joined the writing staff at Quiet Earth, becoming Editor-In-Chief in 2014, a role she still holds. Over the years, she has also produced and hosted a number of podcasts including Before the Dawn, a long-running podcast on the Twilight franchise, Girls on Pop, a podcast on film and popular entertainment from women’s perspective and After the Credits, bi-monthly film podcast with nearly 300 episodes.
Marina is a member of ACM and ACM SIGGRAPH, the Online Film Critics Society, the Alliance of Women Film Journalists, and the Visual Effects Society. She is the President of Spark CG Society and the Vancouver ACM SIGGRAPH chapter. She has also served on juries for several film festivals including DOXA, St. Louis International Film Festival, and the Whistler Film Festival. She joined the Spark CG Society in 2014.
