Three short films by Jaemi Lee, Jae Lew, Caroline So Jung Lee, Alice Il Shin, followed by Joseph Juhn's feature documentary, Jeronimo: The Untold Tale of Koreans in Cuba, and a live filmmaker Q&amp;A.

The animation is an art of timing. In the pre-production 3D characters float in the animator’s workspace, waiting to come alive. It is the animator who makes this virtual world believable to viewers. Two characters are chasing down in the narrow hallway. The narrative comes from the flow of motion and timing. What makes this animation exciting is the balance between the two main characters. One is large, and the other one is small. Their sizes and weights feel different while they are interacting with each other in the same space.

Directors Jae Lew and Caroline So Jung Lee explore the diversity of Asian experiences against the backdrop of Chinatown of Vancouver, B.C. The double exposure of imagery makes us question the potential limitations of seeing from our sole perspective and the related experiences.

What Came Before

What Came Before is a short experimental documentary filmed within Mount Pleasant and Chinatown on unceded Coast Salish Territories, also known as Vancouver, BC. The filmmakers created double exposures on a single 16mm roll, exploring the diversity of Asian experiences and transformations made visible through the natural world.

A Chinese-Canadian man accompanies his Cantonese-speaking grandfather-in-law to pay respects at a loved one’s grave in Markham, Ontario. They struggle to connect with each other - while overcoming the language barrier is awkward, closing the intergenerational gap in cultural knowledge seems downright insurmountable. The young man finds himself removed from traditional practices. When he suddenly finds himself in a crisis, it curiously leads to a shared moment of commonality with the elderly man. Toronto-based filmmaker Alice Shin highlights still moments of unspoken communication as the site of understanding.

Signal Fire

A young man accompanies his stoic Chinese grandfather-in-law to visit a loved one's grave. This film looks at the gaps within intergenerational knowledge and wonders how one might find connection.

From a chance encounter with a Korean Cuban taxi driver, Director Joseph Juhn picks up the scent of a remarkable tale - and fortunately for all of us, he has the presence of mind to start filming. Jeronimo Lim is a fascinating character, and would be worthy of documenting in film in his own right. But beyond his personal charm and accomplishments, his biography provides a unique view into an often overlooked intersection of the Korean Diaspora and Latin American history. Juhn provides a platform for Lim’s family and other Korean Cubans to share their compelling stories.

Jeromino: The Untold Tale of Koreans in Cuba

Born in 1926 to Korean indentured servant parents in Cuba, Jeronimo joins the Cuban Revolution and crosses paths with Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, before turning to his Korean roots and identity.
