Hayung Kim shares the intimate details of growing up in her Korean church. Her candid recollections, weaved in Korean and English, with raw imagery preserves an honesty and that can haunt and simultaneously comfort.&nbsp;

Sunday

Sunday is a semi-autobiographical animation based on the filmmaker’s childhood memories of growing up within her father’s church.

This film is based on the same title poem written by Korean American poet Myung Mi Kim who is known for her avant-garde poetry exploring the issues of dislocation, colonization, immigration. The film/poem consists of three parts. The first part juxtaposes the official procedure of being accepted as a U.S citizen and the home country's emotional experience and memory of where she came from. The second part problematizes the stereotypes and language barrier, which are often driven by binary categorizations. Finally, in the last part, as the title implies, the director and poet highlight an identity with harmonized multiplicity beyond race and geographical locations.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Into Such Assembly

Based on Myung Mi Kim’s iconic poem, this exquisitely made essay film explores cultural transformations and dislocations of national identity and the Korean diaspora. Music by Do Make Say Think.

For her father’s upcoming birthday, director Yeon Park buys a mysteriously advertised time machine. Though the gold box that arrives appears much less fascinating than its purported magical quality, it drives intergenerational conversations between Park and her parents who lived through a violent authoritarian regime in their younger days. Their storytelling shapes the film itself into a time machine, a vehicle that channels memories from lives that are not our own. With a witty montage of videocalls, eBay screens, and her father’s paintings, Park’s film sends an invite to ponder about how our presents interact with our own pasts.

The filmmaker orders a time machine off of eBay for her father’s birthday. With the mysterious device, she begins an unexpected journey into her family’s past.

Directors Peter S. Lee and Julian Kim bring Happy Cleaners, a film of intricately woven stories that presents a holistic, yet painfully specific picture of immigrant life in America. Common themes that often act as a backdrop in telling immigrant stories like generational divide, identity struggle, and family business, are portrayed with a specificity in characters and dialogue, preserving the stories within Happy Cleaners as its own during a time where authenticity and diversity drive engagement with audiences everywhere.
