Description: Follow the Drinking Gourd&nbsp;is a feature documentary about the Black food justice movement. Family-friendly, funny, and moving, this 60-minute film connects the legacy of slavery, capitalism and climate change to our fight for food security. It features: Leah Penniman, author of "Farming While Black"; Naima Penniman of the award-winning, spoken word duo, Climbing Poetree, recently featured on TED; Wanda Stewart, urban farmer in Berkeley, CA; Will Scott, rural farmer in Fresno, CA; Carl Anthony, environmentalist, founder of Urban Habitat; and Rahanna Bisseret-Martinez, former Top Chef Junior finalist. Biography: Shirah Dedman&nbsp;is a filmmaker, journalist, attorney, and activist creating content at the intersection of economics, race, and the environment. Her short film on the displacement of Black Oakland, “You a Nomad,” broadcasted on Free Speech TV. Shirah is a 2018-2019 Associate of the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley and of the Equal Justice Initiative. She’s a member of KPFA Radio’s Local Station Board, and the Programming Committee of its parent organization, Pacifica Foundation. Passionate about cooperative action, she's a member of Liberated Lens, a horizontally-run, intersectional, social justice film collective. The journey to making&nbsp;Follow the Drinking Gourd&nbsp;changed the course of her life. Shirah's now pursuing her Master of Laws in Agriculture &amp; Food Law at the University of Arkansas Law School.

Description: California bill AB626 was passed in 2018, legalizing home restaurants. In 2019, Riverside, CA was the first and only county in the country to implement the law. Now, home restaurant pioneers are changing the face of food by bringing economic opportunity and healthy food options to their communities. Through their food are stories of strength, hope, resilience, and love. Biography: Eda Benjakul&nbsp;is an Emmy award-winning non-fiction director and producer specializing in lifestyle and culinary content. She is the co-creator of the upcoming QuiBi comedic travel series, “High &amp; Low” w/ Erin and Sara Foster. Eda is a member of the Director’s Guild of America and part of the Women’s Steering Committee, where she directed a segment for the PBS San Bernardino Riverside station KVCR, “Hope Builders: Making a Difference.” Her career began as a researcher for ABC Network News, and she has always had a passion for social impact content.Judi Bushala&nbsp;“Avenue Edit”, a Chicago post-production house. With a background in art, she took the job on a whim and instantly fell in love with editing. An exciting new career for her began and she spent the next 5 years learning the nuances of film editing from the ground up. Next she moved to Warsaw, Poland with a company called Red Branch Productions. They produced shows for television networks in the U.K. and Poland, their biggest client being Atomic TV, Poland’s version of MTV. In 2002 Harpo Studios called and she began editing for “The Oprah Winfrey Show”. It would be the most transformative job of her career. For the next fourteen years, Harpo became a place Bushala called home and her coworkers became her Harpo family. During her time there, she mastered the art of storytelling in the edit suite and won an Emmy Award.

Description: Rewilding Honeybees&nbsp;analyzes our current relationship with honeybees and calls for a radical shift in beekeeping. In the United States, beekeepers are losing 45% of their hives annually, but these losses are not happening in the wild. This film tells the story of a revolutionary beekeeper’s vision to restore honeybees' natural ways of living. This could be a solution to saving honeybees. Featuring: Michael Thiele - the pioneer of rewilding honeybees in North America and Thomas D. Seeley - the foremost researcher of honeybees in the wild. Biography: Cameron Nielsen&nbsp;is a documentary filmmaker on a mission to tell stories that inspire environmental and social justice. He has extensive experience working with filmmakers and art activists with a focus on environmental issues. Cameron's most recent film&nbsp;Rewilding Honeybees&nbsp;(UNAFF 2020), looks at one beekeeper’s vision to restore the insect’s natural way of living. He is currently enrolled in the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

REWILDING HONEYBEES

Description: Shepherd Stijn, an outspoken idealist who may have been born in the wrong place and era. He feels at home on the quiet heathlands tending his sheep, far away from today’s hectic Western society. Stijn and his family fight to maintain their quiet and simple life, but this is proving to be increasingly difficult in a densely populated, modern world where the power of money and mass production outweighs good intentions and slow traditions. The family is heading towards a turning point: they can either continue their downward spiral or throw in the towel. The beautiful images and storyline of the documentary clearly depict the constant physical and mental struggle of the protagonist as he tries to strike a balance between his ancient profession and being a modern-day entrepreneur. Stijn has to make a choice, does he keep on fighting the system or is there another option? Biography: Ton van Zantvoort&nbsp;is an acclaimed documentary filmmaker from the Netherlands, whose films have screened at numerous prestigious film festivals. His films have been broadcast all over the world and he has won a dozen awards for best director, best cinematographer and best editor. Ton van Zantvoort observes with great attention and takes us into the worlds of people on the edge, people who try to survive but are confronted by external forces such as tourism, international commerce and mass consumption. With great humanity, van Zantvoort shows us a different world in which all human life is valuable. His films are characterized by a language of intimate images, a poetic structure and enormous involvement. In his lyrical documentaries with socio-economic overtones he usually resists the temptation of doing interviews. His work is original and testifies to a great effort of will by the maker.

Shepherd Stijn and his family fight to maintain their quiet and simple life, but this is proving to be increasingly difficult in a densely populated, modern world where the power of money and mass production outweighs good intentions and slow traditions.
