Inspired by the story of John Colter, who pioneered much of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem with a set of snowshoes, a rifle, and thirty pound pack, discovering ranges and natural phenomena, Sawyer Thomas and Riis Wilbrecht attempted the same route with their own unique perspective and style of adventure. With backgrounds in freestyle and endurance skiing, Thomas and Wilbrecht explore their mental and physical limits while exploring new terrain. Over the winters of 2018 and 2019 Sawyer and Riis accompanied by friends skinned to these remote ranges to ski rarely frequented peaks and show that there are still great adventures right out our backdoors.

In 1935 a young Englishman named Laurie Lee arrived in Spain, walking through the country, earning money for food by playing his violin in bars and plazas. Nearly a century later, the book Laurie Lee wrote – As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning – inspired Alastair Humphreys, who dreamed of retracing Laurie Lee’s footsteps, but could never get past the hurdle of being distinctly unmusical. Finally, he decided to go anyway, risking failure and humiliation every day.

Nordurland is a film about going surfing in the harsh, cold waters of the North Atlantic. Three friends from the subtropical northern rivers of New South Wales, Australia, surfers Torren Martyn and Laurie Towner and needESSENTIALS founder and designer Ryan Scanlon, travel to isolated, snow covered coastlines in search of remote waves.

Nordurland

Professional mountaineer Michi Wohlleben faces seventy kilometers and 7000 meters altitude difference of exposed and brittle ridge climbing if he is to cross the entire Wetterstein Ridge without a break. In addition to strength and endurance, mental stamina and concentration are especially important in order to be able to move through this demanding alpine terrain over such a long period of time. For months before the project start, the German undergoes a hard, structured training schedule, learning to stay focused and agile, even when his body is screaming with exhaustion because that is what the Wetterstein Ridge demands of him.

Two adventures seeking the most beautiful and remote places on planet earth set out to ski the most northern slopes in the world, the Arctic Cordillera on Ellesmere Island, less than 800 kilometers away from the North Pole. Simply getting there is an adventure, as the north of Ellesmere Island isn’t only one of the most remote places on earth but also one of the coldest and is home to polar bears and arctic wolves. On their journey up north the two adventurers don’t only face major athletic challenges but also have to accept that they won’t be taking on the role of the alpha leader on this trip.
