About the Film: A father reflects on his strict upbringing in early 1960’s Puerto Rico, as Hi8 videos - filmed by his son - reveal his son's fascination with violence during his carefree, playful youth. About the Filmmaker: José Fernando Rodriguez was born and raised in Puerto Rico. In the past six years he has made two short films: the documentary short Adolescencia (2017 - Guanajuato International Film Festival, Camden International Film Festival, New Orleans Film Festival, Nitehawk Shorts Festival, DOK Leipzig), and the experimental short Mama,Mama (2018 Bushwick Film Festival, 2018 Nitehawk Shorts Festival, 2019 Guanajuato International Film Festival). He was formerly a senior staffer at Tribeca Film Institute, where he oversaw the growth, funding and overall strategic vision for all their documentary programs, as well as their filmmaker/industry market. He is currently a Feature Film Programmer at the Tribeca Festival.

About the Film: Anshan Diaries uses a real family’s life as its backdrop. Director Charles Dong casts his grandpa, the revolutionaries of the left wing, as the film’s lead, investigating and retracing his family saga spanning three decades of Chinese post-cultural revolution history. About the Filmmaker: Charles Xiuzhi Dong is an award-winning director based in Los Angeles. He received his BFA in Film Production at the NYU, Tisch School of the Arts. He accepted a directing fellowship at the American Film Institute in 2020. His films screened at numerous film festivals. Namely, After Class (2020): Santa Barbara, Oberhausen, and Short Shorts Film Festival &amp; Asia, winning Best Short Award. His documentary film, Anshan Diaries (2021), a finalist for the Student Academy Awards and the Golden Horse Awards, premiered at the 65th San Francisco Film Festival. Anshan Diaries

Anshan Diaries is documentary film investigating the director's family saga spanning three decades of post Chinese cultural revolution history.

About the Film: The Fukumitsu ʻOhana (family) of Hakipuʻu are Native Hawaiian taro farmers and keepers of this generational practice. While much of Oʻahu has become urbanized, Hakipuʻu remains a kīpuka (oasis) of traditional knowledge where great chiefs once resided and their bones still remain. The Fukumitsus are tossed into a world of complex real estate and judicial proceedings when nearby Kualoa Ranch, a large settler-owned corporation, destroys their familial burials to make way for continued development plans. About the Filmmaker: Justyn Ah Chong (Kānaka Maoli) is an award-winning Native Hawaiian filmmaker from Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi. A graduate of USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, Justyn has worked at ʻŌiwi Television Network, Hawaii's premiere Indigenous broadcast station. His acclaimed film, Down on the Sidewalk In Waikiki, premiered at Māoriland Film Festival, winning the People’s Choice Award for Best Short Drama. Pili Ka Moʻo

The Fukumitsu ‘Ohana (family) of Hakipu’u are Native Hawaiian taro farmers. When a nearby corporation digs up the Fukumitsu’s familial burial ground to further their development plans, the ‘Ohana are drawn into a logistically and emotionally complex quest to preserve their ancestral land.

About the Film: Filmed on the Qualla Boundary and Cherokee Nation, ᎤᏕᏲᏅ (What They’ve Been Taught) explores expressions of reciprocity in the Cherokee world, brought to life through a story told by an elder and first language speaker. ᎤᏕᏲᏅ circles the intersection of tradition, language, land and a commitment to maintaining balance. This film was created in collaboration with independent artists from both Cherokee Nation and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians About the Filmmaker: Brit Hensel (Cherokee Nation) is a Tulsa-based filmmaker whose work focuses on Indigenous storytelling and environmental justice. She previously directed and produced the documentary films, Zibi Yajdan (2019,) and Native and American (2017). Brit comes from the Giduwa people and is a citizen of Cherokee Nation. She has a BA in History from North Park University and is a 2019 - 2020 NeXt Doc Collective Film Fellow.
