ABOUT THE FILM: In the ESPN short film Black Girls Play, directors Michéle Stephenson and Joe Brewster chronicle the origins of the hand games that young Black girls have played for generations, and their influence on music, dance, and community across the American creative landscape.


ABOUT THE FILMMAKER: Rada Studio began 20 years ago as a partnership between spouses Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson. Michèle and Joe were determined to tell their stories without compromise and in an unapologetic way that centered on the lived experience of the Black diaspora. The result is a resonant body of creative work that includes fiction films, feature and short-form documentaries, immersive media installations, and experimental hybrid films. The culmination of 7 years of work by the duo director team, Feature Documentary, Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project, Won The Grand Jury Prize At This Year’s Sundance Film Festival.
