This data, freely accessible to the public, is essential for a wide range of users, from fishermen and freighter captains to climate change scientists. And there's the problem: Trump wants to defund the program so that vital scientific research will be starved of this source of data.

Idaho's salmon and steelhead runs -- once among the greatest runs in the world -- and the orcas that feed on them are facing catastrophe from the continued operation of the four Lower Snake River dams, and when these apex predators go, the entire ecosystem collapses.
